Character Design – Azura

Azura is a villain that was made to be part of a superhero trading card game. Character information needed to be organized and formatted to be easily understood for those writing anthologies. For Azura, I designed everything about her to complement and give contrast to one of the heroes, created by another team member.

Powers/Gear:

  • Azura can manipulate electricity to her advantage
  • Blackout: All electrical power surrounding her comes to an immediate halt.
  • Night Vision: Azura’s eyes act like a night vision camera, allowing her perfect vision even in the darkest night.
  • Surge: Electricity can be surged either through an electrical device or Azura herself to electrocute the victim. If Azura is at full power, this can be fatal.
  • Static Shield: Azura generates electricity to create a shield around her, protecting her from physical attacks.
  • Thunder Bolt: While Azura can’t control weather itself, during thunderstorms, she is constantly at max power and can guide the path of lightning if she chooses. If a thunderstorm is rolling in, chances are high that Azura will be out taking advantage of it.
  • Azura’s powers naturally recharge each day, but it takes three days for her to be completely charged. However, she absorbs energy from those around her like a sponge. It is not a conscious decision, but she finds herself drawn toward crowds when her powers are low. This leaves people around her drained, listless and almost in a depressed/robotic state. Doing this, she can recharge her powers within one day.

Background:

Ever since she was little, Lily was known as “the static baby.” It was a running joke in her family that she would static shock anyone who tried to hold her. What started as a joke grew to concern her parents, who both noticed Lillian’s electric shocks were only becoming stronger as she aged. Not knowing what to do, they stifled her powers.

As Lily grew, her powers became her secret shame, something to hide from the world and especially her parents. As she became older and stronger, she refused to tell her family about anything she could do and simply pretended her strange abilities had plateaued.

In school, she was extremely antisocial. Friends were impossible. They couldn’t know about her powers and even if they found out, they wouldn’t be able to comprehend it. In turn, she simply lived with being called a vampire for coming in and sucking all the life out of the room. No matter how lively a classroom was, it always darkened and became quiet once Lily stepped in. As they became despondent, she became more alive. At first It was awkward for Lily and the guilt was intense, as if she was doing something wrong, but she couldn’t control it. It got to a point where she simply didn’t care anymore.

Despite the social struggle, Lily was not cruel. She cared deeply for her family and animals. Azura, Lily’s powerful dark side, came out as a response to Vesper. Vesper seemed to come out of nowhere, flaunting her powers and saving people while Lily was stuck in the shadows, fighting every day to hide her abilities, scolded, shamed and hidden away from the world. Eventually, something broke inside of her. Vesper was being celebrated as a hero while Azura was some kind of mutant, a reject? No. Azura was unleashed, desperate to take Vesper down a notch and to prove just what she was truly capable of.
